Hurricane Preparedness

HURRICANE PREPARDNESS

HURRICANE SEASON IS JUNE 1st to NOVEMBER 1ST

NOW IS THE TIME TO PREPARE.   BELOW IS A LIST OF SUGGESTED HURRICANE PREPARATIONS – YOUR INDIVIDUAL SITUATION MAY REQUIRE ADDITIONAL PREPARATIONS

PLEASE KEEP THIS INFO HANDY AND AVAILABLE

PROPER INSURANCE COVERAGE IS IMPORTANT ALL YEAR LONG BUT PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT DURING HURRICANE SEASON.

THE ABILITY TO PURCHASE INSURANCE IS RESTRICTED DURING A SPECIFIC PERIOD OF TIME WHEN A HURRICANE IS APPROACHING.  FLOOD INSURANCE HAS A WAITING PERIOD BEFORE IT IS EFFECTIVE ANY TIME OF YEAR THAT IT IS PURCHASED

MOST IMPORTANT TO KNOW IS THAT CONDO OWNERS INSURANCE POLICIES AND/OR RENTERS INSURANCE POLICIES DO NOT COVER YOUR DAMAGES IN THE EVENT OF A FLOOD

IN ORDER TO HAVE COVERAGE FROM A FLOOD YOU MUST HAVE FLOOD INSURANCE ON YOUR UNIT AND/OR PERSONAL PROPERTY.   FOR AUTO INSURANCE COVERAGE – YOU MUST HAVE COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE ON YOUR AUTOMOBILE

HEAVY RAIN MAY CAUSE WATER TO ACCUMULATE.  LARGE AMOUNTS OF RAIN FALL OR RAIN FALL FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME WHEN THE GROUND IS ALREADY SATURATED FROM DAYS OF RAIN BACK TO BACK MAY CAUSE EXCESS WATER ACCUMULATION

THE ASSOCIATION IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGE INSIDE YOUR UNIT OR TO PERSONAL PROPERTY IN THE EVENT OF A FLOOD.  THE RESPONSIBILITY TO PROTECT YOUR UNIT AND YOUR PERSONAL PROPERTY IS YOURS

THE ASSOCIATION DOES NOT BOARD UP YOUR WINDOWS.   HOWEVER, YOU ARE FREE TO BOARD UP YOUR WINDOWS AS YOU FEEL IS NECESSARY.  PLEASE REMOVE ANY BOARDS WITHIN 48 HOURS OF THE STORM’S PASSING

IF YOU FEEL YOU MAY WANT TO SANDBAG YOUR SLIDING GLASS DOOR OR FRONT DOOR – PURCHASE SAND BAGS AND HAVE THEM ON HAND WELL IN ADVANCE OF A HURRICANE THREATENING OUR AREA

SAND BAGS MAY TYPICALLY BE PURCHASED AT HARDWARE STORES.  THEY ARE ALSO AVAILABLE ONLINE FROM H.D. SUPPLY (AND OTHER SUPPLIERS) IN CONVENIENT, EASY TO STORE SMALL BOXES.  BAGS OF TOP SOIL OR POTTING SOIL ALSO WORK WELL.

DO NOT WORRY ABOUT BEING THE NEIGHBOR WHO OVER PREPARES AND THEN THE HURRICANE DOESN’T IMPACT OUR AREA.   IT IS MUCH WORSE TO BE THE NEIGHBOR WHO DID NOTHING TO PREPARE – WHEN THE HURRICANE IMPACTS OUR AREA

Create a Disaster Supplies Kit
The following items should be included in a disaster supplies kit:
Water
Food
First aid supplies
Clothes, bedding, prescriptions and sanitation supplies
Flashlights, batteries
Cash (ATM machines etc., may not be operating after a storm) Important papers, copies of insurance policies, etc.

*Keep the items that you would most likely need during an evacuation in an easy-to-carry container (i.e. a large, covered trash container; a camping backpack; or a duffle bag).

Windows and Doors
When a hurricane strikes, windows and doors can be blown open or broken, allowing wind and water inside. Boarding these openings can reduce the risk of wind and water damage.  The Association does not perform this task for you.

Storm Approaching
Please remove all items from patios, balconies and front door areas. These become missiles in the wind and can be blown into windows, cars etc.

Anything left in these areas during Management’s last check of the Property before a storm will be removed and placed in a dumpster enclosure.   Management, the Board of Directors and the Association will not be responsible for any personal property left in these areas.

  • Have enough nonperishable food and water to take care of you, your family and your pets for up to five days without power or water.
  • Fill your bath tub or washer with water to provide water for flushing toilets, etc
  • If a boil water notice is issued – and there is no power to boil water – add 16 drops of fragrance-free chlorine bleach per gallon of water to purify. Let it sit for 30 minutes before consuming
  • In the event you lose electricity, avoid opening the refrigerator to help it maintain the cool temperature inside.
  • Stay away from downed power lines. If you get too close to a downed line that is still energized, you can be electrocuted – even if you never touch the wire.
  • If you encounter a downed wire, please call 911.

·          BE AWARE OF RISING WATER NEAR YOUR DOORS
•      Be aware of rising waters in the parking lots and move your vehicle to higher ground if necessary.
•      Monitor the weather conditions closely and be prepared to follow recommendations of local authorities

•      PLAN AN EVACUATION ROUTE – IF YOU EVACUATE MAKE SURE SOMEONE HAS YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION AND PLANNED DESTINATION
  • Never drive through flooded roadways. A little water can carry away small and large vehicles.
  • When walking, do not cross flowing streams. It only takes six inches of rushing water to knock you over.
  • If your vehicle stalls, get out immediately and go to higher ground.
  • Remember these four life-saving words: TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN.
**If you need to file a hurricane-related claim, having a detailed home inventory can make the process faster and easier. Walk through your home with your phone and record each room, opening drawers and closets as you go. Save the video to the cloud so it’s safe, even if your home isn’t.
